That point that Delany makes about cliches has obviously not been lost on Joss Whedon. So often, Whedon will set up a situation that is overused and cliched, only to make a 90-degree turn at the last moment and topple the cliche on its ear. That gives a story an element of surprise that keeps a reader (or in Whedon's case, viewer) interested.
